HUSH - Press Release
COULD IT BE? SOMETHING TO BE AWARE OF DURING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH?

Finally, a breakthrough; something to be aware of during “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. With billions of dollars having been spent on breast cancer research there seems to be nothing to report year after year. But wait, the silence is over....a multiple award winning film called HUSH uncovers the link between breast cancer and abortion with a surprisingly unusual approach. This revolutionary film is asking audiences to take a break from staunchly political bias with a perspective that is neither “pro-life” or “pro-abortion” but instead attempts to take the high road for the sake of women's health, by being, “pro-information”.

In the film, Gill focuses on investigating the disputed connection between abortion and breast cancer, a link that is legally required to be told to women prior to an abortion in 5 U.S. States, but adamantly denied by worldwide health organizations and abortion providers. Since 2012 at least a dozen studies from South Asia have found a significant association, averaging a 400% increase in breast cancer risk for women with abortion histories. Whether this association is real or not is of great concern to women everywhere, as Breast Cancer is the leading cause of death among women 20 to 59 in North America, and up to 1 in 3 women may have an abortion in her lifetime.  The film painstakingly reviews research gathered globally and scrutinizes scientists who are presenting these disturbing conclusions.

Initially, Gill felt that questioning anything around abortion was a treason to her feminist identity. But when she heard that the health information being given to women was subject to the politics of the people involved, and that 50 million women having abortions annually could be affected, she determined to take an honest, comprehensive look at this highly volatile and politicized subject.  What she discovered in the process is not just vital to the subject of abortion, but also critical to her own life, and is sure to ignite an updated dialogue about feminism, reproductive health, and the progress of women in general.

The story of how the film was made is as unprecedented as the film itself, with the unlikely production team of “pro-choice” Director, Gill, and “pro-life” Executive Producer, Drew Martin. As well as Producer and Editor, Joses Martin who takes a “neutral perspective”. According to Joses, “What most Breast Cancer Organizations won't be telling you when they're raising money this month is that one of the biggest known protective factors against breast cancer is having a baby, and especially at a young age. That's not some out-there anti-abortion science, that's a well documented physiological fact, but it's politically incorrect to say so, and it certainly isn't communicated when a woman is making a health decision about her unplanned pregnancy. So HUSH, really, is a compelling look at how the politics of an explosive topic like abortion effects science and health information at every level.”

The film also investigates whether abortion increases a woman's risk of psychological problems, and premature birth. As it happens, November is international Preterm Birth Awareness Month.

Prior to HUSH, Gill acted as Writer, Director and Producer on 7 documentary films.  She has also been a jury member for Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Calgary Foundation and an AMPIA Board Member.  She is a Chatelaine Magazine “Woman of the Year” nominee. When she is not behind the camera, Gill is a voice-over artist and commercial talent.  She is the TV host of 2 award-wining food and wine shows, and received a 2015 AMPIA nomination for “Best Television Host.”
