History of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute
The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute (BCPI)
was co-founded in 1999 by Drs. Joel Brind, Angela
Lanfranchi, John T. Bruchalski and William L.
Toffler. Dr. Brind, a scientist and researcher,
was aware of risk reduction strategies not widely
known to the public and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Lanfranchi, a breast cancer surgeon, saw
the incidence of breast cancer increasing in
young women. She wanted to see this trend reversed.
Dr. Bruchalski, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist
and Dr. Toffler, a Family Practice Physician
and Professor of Family Medicine, saw the need
for their patients to know about the ABC link,
and were alarmed at the lack of information
available.
Dr. Peter Mazolewski, a general surgeon,
joined the Board of Directors in
2002. He has already joined Dr. Brind and
Dr. Lanfranchi in giving lectures to professional
and lay audiences on the breast cancer link.
Since its inception, BCPI has completed
and presented its first research project
in poster form at a major national breast
cancer conference. It has developed numerous
resources to educate both lay and professional
groups, including brochures, booklets and
audio and video tapes. Its board members
have lectured to numerous lay and professional
groups, as well as participated in radio
and television interviews.
